Imam Termizi Shrine

  One of the famous founders of the science of Hadis, the second largest scholar in Islam after Imam Bukhari, the author of many works, the hadis scholar Imam Termizi shrine (X-XI) is located near the graveyard in the village of Yakhtiyul, six kilometers east of Sherabad district. The author of “Sihohi Sitta” (Six Trusted Collection) one of the well-known hadith book in Islam, the full name of the great hadith scholar is Muhammad ibn Isa ibn Savra ibn Musa ibn ad-Dahhak as-Sulami Bughi Termizi, he was born in 209 AH (824 AD) in the village of Bug near Termez. According to Ibn Amir’s citation, he died in 279 AH 13 Rajab / 892 AD on Monday, October 8, in the village of Bug (6 km east from the current city of Sherabad), 48 km far from Termez.

The mausoleum of Isa Termizi, one of the six most famous hadis scholars in the Islamic world, erected 150 years after the scholar’s death on a tomb near the present-day city of Sherabad. There is information that Abdulatif, the son of Mirzo Ulugbek, repaired the mausoleum over the grave of Isa Termizi in the middle of the XV century. The mausoleum is located southeast of Sherabad and consists of four-story building.

Nowadays, the mausoleum consists of 4 rooms with arches passing through each other. The history of the rooms is 4.3×4.5 m. The northeastern side was later blocked due to the construction of the awning. From the grave, a narrow long path leads to the khanaqah. The dome roof and an altar, which leads to the northeast from the two adjoining rooms. The dome with three terraces in front of the inn, the walls of which are shield-shaped, are decorated with plaster ornaments. A small domed device occupies the main style of the mausoleum. The central hall of the mausoleum and the mosque surrounded by an altar, from the south by a cemetery, with a brick roof, and from the north by a wide porch. The third hall is also decorated with an octagonal porch and three- and eight-sided patterns.

The upper part of the mausoleum room is covered with a dome and the four rooms are covered in the correct style, the khanaqah was built of 24-25×4.5-5 cm square bricks with the help of clay mixtures. The total area of the building is 19.3×6.8 m, the three rooms are the same 4.3×4.3 m. The building was damaged at various times, in the 15th century it was turned to the north-west, and the complex was severely damaged from the north-west. At the front of the mausoleum, there is a porch with carved columns in the early XX century. The construction of the mausoleum of Imam Termizi was originally done by D.N. Logofet, in 1945 by V.A. Voronin, in 1968 by archaeologist Z.A. Hakimov, in 1977 A. Akimenko, I. Gudkov and V.A Arshavskaya conducted research. These studies provided new and important information in the science of architecture and archeology. On March 13, 1989 in Tashkent at the Congress of the Spiritual Administration of Muslims of Central Asia and Kazakhstan in the autumn of 1990, it was decided to “widely celebrate the 1200th anniversary of the birth of Abu Isa Termizi in the country.” On March 28, 1989, repair and flourishing works began at the mausoleum of the scientist. In 2000-2001, on the 2500th anniversary of the city of Termez, the mausoleum of the scientist was reconstructed.
