The issue of being respectful to teachers is one of the most serious issues. After all, some scholars have said, “Being respectful to teachers is worse than being respectful to parents.” If we stop at the explanation of the word “becoming respectful,” this word is Arabic, and in the dictionary it means “to split” and “to cut,” and expresses the meanings of hurting, disobeying, and opposing.
In a word, the word “behaving respectfully” is the opposite of the word “birr.” Therefore, respecting teachers is one of the important teachings of our religion. After all, respecting and honoring scholars is a duty for the student of knowledge. In fact, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said:
عَنْ أنَسٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيهِ وَسَلَّمَ : «العلماءُ أمناءُ اللهِ على خلقِهِ». رواه السيوطي
“Scholars are the trustworthy and trustworthy servants of Allah.” (Narrated by Al-Suyuti).
Our Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) did not give such a high status to scholars who impart knowledge to people for no reason. In fact, he is considered the leader of scholars who guide humanity to the right path.
In several places in the Holy Quran, there are verses that praise the value of scholars who are given knowledge. In particular, Surah Al-Mujhadala states:
“Allah will raise in rank those of you who believe and those who have been given knowledge. And Allah is Aware of what you do.” (Surah Al-Mujhadala, verse 11).
Today, some young people are showing bad habits such as ignoring and opposing their teachers. This, in turn, hurts the teacher and causes the student to be arrogant towards his teacher. In fact, there will never be a shortage of students who serve their teachers and respect them. After all, in our religion, it is also commanded to show respect and honor to teachers and elders, and to receive their blessings.
